Adopt a Ferret

The Washington Ferret Rescue and Shelter has many ferrets available. Most of our ferrets are healthy, lovable, easy-going pets that would be great for a first-time ferret owner. Some of the fuzzies are sick or have behavioral problems and are only suitable for placement with experienced ferret owners. Whatever your needs, our counselors will be happy to help you find the ideal match!

There is an adoption fee for each ferret which ranges from $75 to $100, depending on the age of the ferret. The fee is used to pay for the shelter's operating expenses; supplies and equipment for over 30 ferrets adds up, especially since some of the shelter's inhabitants are elderly or chronically ill.

If things don't work out for you and your ferret, the shelter will always take the ferret back (regardless of the circumstances). The adoption fee is refundable for up to 7 days.

We do ask that prospective adopters fill out an Adoption Application & our Adoption Contract or Foster Contract when adopting or fostering ferrets from us. We try to get an info sheet on each incoming surrender if possible, so that we can later pass that info on to you. If you'd like to review any of the documents, simply click on the link to look at them.

Ferrets that come through the shelter have had their teeth cleaned, nails clipped, have been bathed and inspected for pests and have been given a general once-over. If, at any time, your ferret needs his or her nails clipped or teeth cleaned, please feel free to bring them back to the shelter for these services. The shelter will soon be microchipping all incoming ferrets, and will microchip your current pets for a small fee. Please contact us for more details.

Adoption vs. Fostering

Healthy ferrets are adopted out to good homes for a small fee, however, families who are willing to care for an ill ferret may choose to foster. There is no fee for taking home a foster ferret, and the shelter pays for all of the vet bills. Fostering is not for everyone, but if you are willing to give an ill or older ferret a chance, you will find that they are still loving, rewarding pets. These poor creatures need good homes and loving attention. If you have room in your life to foster a ferret, please contact the shelter today.

The Ferrets

Some ferrets arrive at the Shelter with a cage-mate, and the pair cannot be broken up for the sake of the fuzzies' emotional health. If this is the case, or if a ferret requires some kind of special care, it will be indicated. If you have any questions about the fuzzies, please send Liane an email.

The Extreme Weezils know that if everyone with ferrets, who can feasibly afford it money and time wise, adopted just one [or two!] ferrets from their local shelters, we could eradicate the shelter population explosion ... Just a thought ....
