Friday, October 04, 2002 11:43:06 AM It has been just over a month now that we have had our German Shepherd, Saxon, now almost three months old to the day. We have tried introducing Saxon to the Extreme Weezils during a free-roam session [they have two each day, at least] and he became overwhelmed. We have trained Saxon so well to NOT jump on, chew on, or put his mouth on or near any of the ferrets that they take advantage of him and go in for the attack. Of course, there is no real malevolent intent on the part of the ferrets - they just think they are having fun. As any ferret enthusiast knows, fun for ferrets can consist of trying to tear each others heads off or other vital body part [like ANY body part ISN'T vital - where do expressions like that come from?] - |
Saturday, September 14, 2002 9:58:46 PM Methinks my weezils taught Saxon how to mug for the camera ... He's got the look that the camera LOVES! I have spent the past few weeks playing nanny to a giant fuzzy pac-man with a chewing fetish and the need to pee - all the time. What do the FERRETS think of Saxon? They LOVE him! He's a great big ferret toy that smells great and isn't allowed to fight back. What more could a ferret ask for? |
Saturday 9.7.02 7am PST After returning Saxon to his dog crate for another hour or so of sleep [per his request, more or less, as he decided to go back into the dark bedroom where my husband was still sleeping and lay down at the foot of the bed, so off to his own bed he went, without protest] I find myself strangely relieved and feeling as though I've accomplished something. |
A Ferret and Cat Enthusiast tries Her Hand at Being A Dog Mom
9.6.02 It has been over two years since we brought our first couple of ferrets home to add to our double feline household. I am currently the proud mom of eight ferrets, two cats, and yes, one puppy dog. Just when I thought I was really getting the hang of this fuzzy mom thing, along came Saxon and life became far more interesting once again. |

September 1, 2002 ... A New Era has begun for the Extreme Weezils After spending a week in Boston, MA for a family visit and vacation, I arrived home to Seattle mid-day. We drove right from the airport to the breeder to pick up the newest member of our family - our German Shepherd Puppy Dog S A X O N!It was a two hour ride from the breeder to our house. We had transformed our largest ferret carrier, big enough to hold all eight of the Extreme Weezils, into a puppy carrier. I ended up having my hand most of the way inside the front of the crate the whole way home while Saxon alternated crying with sleeping against my hand. Poor guy's first car ride was not very fun, but at least it wasn't to the vet! That will be his SECOND ever car ride, and the day for that is TOMORROW.... The First Day
Saxon's first day in his new home was quite the adventure, as one would well imagine having so much space and so many fuzzies to meet. The first meeting between Saxon and the eight ferrets was captured via digital pics starting HERE.Our first night was filled with lots of heartbreaking puppy crying and minimal amounts of sleep. It was prearrainged that I was allowed to sleep through the night [as much as one possibly can through all the crying] since I was to work that weekend. Day Two
Actually, day two was our first FULL day together with Saxon, from dawn to dusk and beyond. This day brought his first accidental floor soiling - in the sunken living room. I theorized that the step down was similar enough to Saxon's step down from the back door to the yard beyond. Day Three
I worked all day this day. We had my sister-in-law watch Saxon while my husband went to the store to get a pet door. When he returned, Saxon had managed to soil the front living room rug TWICE. Saxon is now banned from the living room ...Day Four
I am feeling a lot more comfortable now with Saxon and the ferrets together. So far there has been no violence or threats of such. However, the past couple of days have been real fun for Blizzard, as he treats Saxon like a horse. Blizzard jumps on Saxon's back with his teeth and/or front paws and rides 'em until he is either thrown off or lets go. I am not sure whether this amuses me or horrifies me. I'll let you know when I decide...Day Six : 9.4.02
Time for me to get ready for work, so here's a quick overview of the past day and a half :* tried to get video of Blizzard riding Saxon, but since we are trying to put an end to that, I had to put the camera down and lend a hand or two [I really needed four or six..] * Blizzard bit Saxon HARD on the nose this morning, upsetting all of us and reminding me that it is not just Saxon I have to keep the ferrets protected from, but the other way around as well * Dusty [one of our two cats] has become almost a permanent part of my lap, at least whenever I'm sitting here on the computer. I really don't mind, actually I quite enjoy my little girl warming my lap for me for hours on end, as long as I'm still able to walk when she finishes [legs fall asleep!] * Pepper, Dusty's sister and the more vocal of the two, has not had a knock down drag out fight with Saxon yet, but it is only a matter of time. I don't think she is too happy about the new situation, but so far no one has lost an eye ... yet ... |
