NEW for MARCH 22, 2002
Fate smiled upon the Extreme Weezils' one week ago in the form of a visitor to my place of employment. An occasional customer at the pharmacy as herself would most likely know about me and my ferrets [sung to the tune of 'Me and My Shadow' but much sillier...] She stopped me before I reached the door of the restroom, the first and only time I was able to get there that twelve hour workday, and told me that she can no longer keep her ferrets, could I help her in any way?
A few phone calls and a handful of days of restless waiting paid off in the form of our two NEW Extreme Weezils : Blizzard and Bonzai! Interestingly enough, my husband and I were just discussing the possibility of adopting a couple of more shelter ferrets within the next year or so the day before this visit. I knew in my heart that we were destined to bring them home the moment I heard of the then-named Bob and Billy, adopted a year and a year and a half ago respectively, and no longer able to be cared for in a sudden-allergy, family break-up situation combination. They have been showered in love, attention, fun, fuzz, and snacks since coming home with us and becoming a member of the Extreme Weezils! Of course, as with all our fuzzies, they will continue to receive the highest possible amount of care from both of us until they leave this life, hopefully from living a full life to a ripe old age relatively free of illness and sorrow. This I pledge to all my fuzzies, now and in the future. Wouldn't YOUR fuzzies like to receive a similar pledge from YOU? Go ahead, write down or otherwise develop your own personal promise to your ferrets and tell them. They will love you all the more for it .... |

Overwhelmed with Empathy and Helplessness : The Plight of the Ferret As you may know, the Extreme Weezils wholeheartedly believe in ADOPTION when bringing a new ferret or ferrets home. The ferret shelter is the FIRST place you should look... PERIOD. If you live in the Seattle/Puget Sound/Western Washington area of the world check out the Adoptables Page for deserving ferrets seeking a forever home! I bring this up for the sole reason of awareness. Tonight I went to update the ADOPTABLES page and saw the many ferrets just waiting to be adopted. My heart took on the weight of each and every ferret there at the shelter while I feel helpless. Although we adopted three from the shelter, I feel like I should get in the car and drive mach chicken down I-5 to the rescue, and return to our humble abode with a car full of adopted ferrets! My mind races with the thoughts of converting our guest room into an adjacent ferret room, making the area that the ferrets have access to all the time more than double it's current size. February 19, 2002 - Blitz Escapes For An Instant and New Rule Is Put Forth This past week has been a crazy, wacky, weezil-y one! My husband decided that the unseasonably warm couple of days we have had was the perfect opportunity to not only take the ferrets outside in the yard for a walk, but also allow them to roam WITHOUT THEIR HARNESS OR COLLAR around the yard, supervised... I was horrified, feeling ominously certain that something very bad was going to happen. Despite my protests to the contrary, I enjoyed watching the boys romp around outside, either just one or two at a time, sans harness, supervised by my husband. One time I picked Sasha up from inside the house, in the weezil room, and held her up to the window to look out to see her dad and her brother. I don't think she was too happy about the arraingment, and promptly wanted to go outside as well. Due to Sasha's extra small size, she can slip out of any harness, restraint, and escape most enclosures, as well as get into the smallest cracks and crevices imaginable. BASIC STORY : Blitz goes outside without harness and finds a way UNDER our fence and into the neighbor's yard. There, a half-mad dog waits the days and nights away chained to the house, eeking out a miserable existence I can only hope is some karmic-laden being reincarnated and doin' time... Blitz gets scared when Matrix starts barking ... Blitz cannot find hole in fence to get back to our yard ... Husband almost jumps fence in an effort to get Blitz before Matrix does. ... Wife has a mild coronary when husband calls her at work to tell her about the near miss... new rule is created : no ferrets outside without the harness on!!! |

It has been a bit over two months since we have been living in this wonderful, beautiful house. I still have to pinch myself at times to make sure I am not dreaming, and occasionally cringe thinking I really WILL wake up back in that tiny apartment we called home for five years...
Pepper is a one-being cat, that being is my husband. She lives, breathes, and exists solely for him and expresses such by shadowing his movements, sleeping on his head, and other similarly endearing behaviors. Pepper is chock full of what we call Cat-itude [see Weezil Words : Site Glossary for an expanded definintion...]
The cats, Dusty and Pepper, absolutely love the new house. I suppose after this post I should not call our house "new" - but for now that will suffice. The cats run full speed up and down the length of the house, 2100 feet of running space has encouraged exercise in the form of play for ALL the species living here. Even we humans purchased a Bowflex and placed it in the back bedroom, which is large enough to contain our old living room, dining room, AND kitchen! [I just pinched myself again...]
The ferrets and cats have settled into their latest routine, seeming to be fully adjusted to their new surroundings. New habits and behaviors are taking shape and forming for what could be a lifetime, and we are catching it all on film - digital, 35mm, and video - to share with the world. Sasha has become quite fond of Pepper. This comes as quite a surprise as Pepper is the least tolerant of our cats. Sasha will approach Pepper and begin grooming her; licking Pepper's ears, face, back, and also climbing all over Pepper to reach these areas. Sasha is the smallest of our six ferrets, weighing in at a whopping pound and a smidge. Pepper just sits there and actually PURRS! |
January 27, 2002 : A Look Back at a Wicked Weezily Winter Week
Today is day seven, the final day of my first week of vacation for 2002 [ ... TOOK thousand TOOK ... ] Just as I was sitting down at the computer to type this entry, I quickly glanced at Weezil Cam, which runs in real time on my personal computer, and saw Raven on top of the cage. At our old apartment, what seems like many eons ago, the ferrets would scale their cage in the ferret room to get our attention. Knowing Raven, she would also attempt to clear the wall to freedom, even though earlier attempts landed her flat.
With a resigned yet loving sigh I traversed the two-room span into the hallway in order to attend to the fuzzies. Raven was indeed vying for attention and wished to come out for a late Morning Romp. Where there is one Extreme Weezil, there is sure another to follow. Bandit and Blitz did not dissapoint and made spirited lunges onto my arm when I reached in again ...
Now for the tricky part ... This probably happens in multi-species households as well : Dusty, 'my' cat out of our two cats, laid her claim to my lap just as I sat down quickly to shut off my computer monitor. Not wanting to hurt feelings or deprive any of our fuzzies of much-needed personal attention, I was forced to sit here until 1. I hear a crash or similar noise of destruction or trouble resulting from the trio of ferrets out and about right now or
2. Dusty grows bored with my warm lap and gets up to find another more suitable cat napping spot in the house. Since my prior post [see 1.24.02 below] I have managed to finish off most of the projects I had planned for the week. It has been almost two full months since we have lived here in our wonderfully weezily new house and I thought I had better finish off the last of the paper sorting, filing and tossing that accompanies most major moves... January 24, 2002 : My Vacation is Half Over
This week I have realized how much time we devote to our ferrets. This is the first vacation week since my pre-ferret days [HORRORS!] that I have stayed home to just do .... nothing. Sure, I've worked out, rested, done some more organization and filing, and the like, but I have noticed how much ferret-related time fills my day. I've broken it down to this:
* Cleaning the ferret room
* Looking for ferrets that are roaming the house, probably getting into trouble * Playing with ferrets in and outside their room * Walking ferrets outside in the yard * Going to the store and/or online to purchase ferret related products * Cleaning ferret messes left behind after the weezils are out for a romp * Running around my house squeeking Booda-Bunny to call the Extreme Weezils for a snack, usually followed by putting them back in their rooms In contrast, the list of things that I have NOT done is far too long to place here, and of course not even remotely relevant, so I shall ponder that one on my OWN time and get back to the weezilage...
NOTE: I just got up from this computer for the first time in a couple of hours and, as usual, glanced in the Weezil Room on my way to take a shower. Sasha was looking up at me, waiting by the door patiently and silently like only Sasha can. Resigning myself to waiting a bit longer before showering, I scooped her up and let her out for a solo morning romp. She is now eating cat kibble in the front hallway. The things we do for Ferrets!
